Savory Sweet Potato Waffles Recipe (Paleo, Grain/Nut/Dairy/Sugar-free) | Fresh Planet Flavor

Who’s ready for sweet potato waffles? I call these savory sweet potato waffles because there’s no “added sugar” in the form of honey, agave, maple syrup, coconut sugar, dates, etc. There’s just coconut flour, eggs, coconut milk, salt and cinnamon. Cinnamon is one of those fun ingredients that seems to trick your taste-buds into thinking you’re eating something sweet when you’re not. At least, it does for me! So, I added it here to keep things interesting, but the cinnamon flavor is super subtle.

These are also titled savory sweet potato waffles because I loaded them with fried eggs and bacon (served with sautéed dandelion greens, too, because… veggies!) but they’d also be delicious if you choose the whipped cream and fruit route.

One final note: of course these are grain-free and dairy-free, but I made an effort to keep these nut-free too. My apologies to the folks out there with egg and coconut sensitivities, however!

Savory sweet potato waffles are a perfect pairing with egg and bacon or fruit and syrup!

These simple savory waffles are high in protein and fiber, without added sugar.
  • Waffles
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup sweet potato puree
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup coconut flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  1. Grease and preheat your waffle-maker. In a blender, puree the eggs, egg whites and sweet potato puree until combined.
  2. Add the dry ingredients and pulse until thoroughly mixed.
  3. Spoon into the waffle-maker, and cook until brown and cooked through (several minutes after the “ready” light activated, in mine).
  4. Serve warm, with the toppings of your choice.

I do this, minus the milk and I make pancakes because I don’t have a waffle maker! I also swap in butternut squash! YUM 🙂

You omit the coconut milk and they’re still moist enough? Don’t sub anything else in? Curious…

These look awesome! Love that there’s no added sugar at all AND that you use coconut flour as I have to stay away from almonds for awhile. Totally up my alley, can’t wait to try. THANKS!

Thank you, Alexandra! Been making a real effort to include more recipes with no sugar or nuts.

Wondering how this recipe is considered dairy free when it calls for eggs, I know eggs are not dairy in the traditional sense, however, they are an animal byproduct? Have you tried the recipe using an egg subsititute?

This works best for pancakes… when I made it in my waffle machine I spent a day cleaning afterward!

Glad to hear you got it to work for you! Waffle machines do vary, mine is particularly non-stick, I think!
